Asian Americans are the fastest growing demographic in the country, yet historically, they've been near-invisible in our popular culture. But that's beginning to change. We examine the long history of Asian American Studies, why it's finally having its moment in the South, and how that feels to advocates with the concurrent rise in anti-Asian violence.
Anisa presents a brief oral history of Islamophobia in the US in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. We often reference "what Muslims went through" but what exactly did that involve? We cover the big stuff, the little stuff, and how it all formed the epicenter of a global campaign of terror and violence that targeted over a billion people. Including: the ideological framing of a political phenomenon, the state's exclusive right to kill, and the two sides of American exceptionalism.
Embodied guest host Anisa Khalifa first became a fan in high school. She gets an explanation from a psychologist about how being in fandoms benefits mental health, and a journalist describes what role the internet has played in shaping fan culture. Plus, Anisa invites the co-hosts of her K-drama podcast to reflect on how fandom brought them together — and what it means to be a fan.
A podcast about what it was like to grow up Muslim in the shadow of 9/11, how coming of age during that era changed the trajectories of our lives, and how the experience differed either side of the Atlantic. Featuring moving, essential, and sometimes surprisingly funny interviews with artists, academics, journalists, religious leaders, and more.
We're Saya, Anisa, and Paroma, three women brought up in three different continents, as diverse in our cultural outlooks as we are in our accents. With our powers of drama analysis combined, we formed Dramas Over Flowers: a podcast that lets us work through the joys and frustrations of our love affair with Korean dramas.
In the earth beneath our neighborhoods, the woods surrounding our favorite hiking trails and the waters that line our coasts lurks a strange phenomenon: Creatures that have traveled great distances to call communities in the South home – and wreak havoc on the world around them. As unwelcome as these new neighbors may be, they’re also giving scientists, farmers, fisherfolk, homeowner associations and more a chance to get creative finding ways to eliminate these species, mitigate their harm or work toward a more peaceful coexistence. CREEP is a podcast that encourages us to lean in for a closer look at how insects and animals are changing the environment, economy and health of our region in ways we never expected. Presented in partnership with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
Each week, The Broadside highlights a story from the heart of the American South and asks why it matters to you. From news to arts and culture, we dive into topics that might not be on a front page, but deserve a closer look. Along the way, we explore the nuances of our home—and how what happens here ripples across the country.
Hosted by Anisa Khalifa, The Broadside is a production of North Carolina Public Radio-WUNC.
